Understanding Roman numerals

Basic principles
  • Addition: VI = 5+1 = 6 (larger first)
  • Subtraction: IV = 5-1 = 4 (smaller before larger) — only for I, X, C (e.g., IX=9, XL=40, XC=90, CD=400, CM=900).
  • No zero: Romans had no symbol for 0.
  • Repetition: I, X, C, M can be repeated up to three times. V, L, D never repeat.
Common uses today
  • Clock faces (IV, VI, etc.)
  • Movie copyright years (e.g., MMXXV)
  • Book chapters & volume numbers
  • Monarchs & popes (Elizabeth II, Louis XIV)
  • Sporting events (Super Bowl LVII)
Note on accuracy: This converter uses strict subtractive notation (standard modern roman). Values above 3999 are not represented with classic symbols (no vinculum support). For large numbers, the converter will warn you.
