Drawing Tools

These are your main tools for creating artwork. They work just like real art supplies!

Pencil Tool P

Draw thin, precise lines

What it does: The pencil draws thin lines, just like a real pencil. It's perfect for details!

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Pencil tool (looks like a pencil)
  2. Choose a color from the color box
  3. Click and drag on the drawing area to draw
  4. Release the mouse button to stop drawing
Practice Activity:

Draw a connect-the-dots picture!

  1. Make 10 dots with the pencil
  2. Connect them to make a star shape
  3. Color it in with the fill tool

Brush Tool B

Paint with different brush styles

What it does: The brush paints thicker lines and comes in different styles like calligraphy, airbrush, and crayon!

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Brush tool (looks like a paint brush)
  2. Choose a brush style from the menu below
  3. Pick a color and size
  4. Click and drag to paint on the canvas
Brush Styles:
  • 🎨 Normal brush - smooth painting
  • 🖋️ Calligraphy - slanted tips
  • 💦 Airbrush - spray paint effect
  • 🖍️ Crayon - textured lines
Try This:

Use the airbrush brush to create clouds in the sky! Click and hold in one spot to make the cloud darker.

Line & Curve Tools

Create straight and curved lines

What they do: These tools help you draw perfect straight lines and smooth curves.

Line Tool:
  1. Click the Line tool
  2. Choose a line thickness
  3. Click where the line should start
  4. Drag to where it should end
  5. Release to finish the line
Curve Tool:
  1. Click the Curve tool
  2. Draw a straight line first
  3. Click and drag the line to curve it
  4. You can curve it twice for S-shapes!
Secret Trick: Hold the Shift key while using the line tool to make perfectly horizontal, vertical, or 45-degree lines!

Shape Tools

Create perfect shapes every time! No more wobbly circles or crooked squares.

Rectangle Tool

Draw squares and rectangles

How to use:
  1. Click the Rectangle tool
  2. Choose outline, filled, or both
  3. Click and drag diagonally
  4. Release to create the shape

Hold Shift for perfect squares!

Ellipse Tool

Draw circles and ovals

How to use:
  1. Click the Ellipse tool
  2. Choose fill style
  3. Click and drag to draw
  4. Make it round or oval

Hold Shift for perfect circles!

Polygon Tool

Draw triangles, stars, and more!

How to use:
  1. Click the Polygon tool
  2. Draw the first side
  3. Click for each corner
  4. Double-click to finish

Try: Triangles (3 clicks), pentagons (5 clicks)

Rounded Rectangle

Draw rectangles with rounded corners

How to use:
  1. Click the Rounded Rectangle tool
  2. Choose fill style
  3. Click and drag to draw
  4. Perfect for buttons!

Great for: Making comic book speech bubbles!

Fix mistakes and add special effects with these handy tools!

Eraser Tool E

Remove mistakes and clean up

What it does: The eraser removes any drawing and shows the background color underneath.

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Eraser tool (looks like a pink eraser)
  2. Choose a size (small for details, large for big areas)
  3. Click and drag over the area you want to erase
  4. Everything under the eraser disappears!
Time Saver: Instead of erasing, you can press Ctrl + Z to undo your last action! This works for any mistake.
Eraser Sizes:
  • Small - for tiny details
  • Medium - for normal mistakes
  • Large - for big areas
  • Extra Large - for cleaning up fast
Pro Trick:

Right-click with the eraser tool to only erase the color you're currently using! This protects other colors in your drawing.

Fill Tool F

Color large areas instantly

What it does: Also called the "Paint Bucket" tool, it fills any closed area with color in one click!

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Fill tool (looks like a tipping paint bucket)
  2. Choose a color from the color box
  3. Click inside any closed shape
  4. The entire area fills with your chosen color!
Important: The area must be completely closed (no gaps in the outline) or the color will "leak" out and fill the whole canvas!
Color Experiment:

Try filling these shapes:

  1. Draw a square with the pencil tool (make sure lines connect!)
  2. Use the fill tool to make it blue
  3. Draw a circle inside the square
  4. Fill the circle with yellow
  5. Notice how the fill tool only colors the circle, not the square!

Selection Tools

Move, copy, and resize parts of your drawing

What they do: These tools let you select parts of your drawing to move, copy, or change.

Rectangular Selection:
  1. Click the Rectangular selection tool
  2. Drag a rectangle around what you want to select
  3. Dashed lines show the selection
  4. Drag to move, or right-click for more options
Free-form Selection:
  1. Click the Free-form selection tool
  2. Draw any shape around your selection
  3. Great for selecting irregular shapes
  4. Connect back to the starting point
Cool Tricks with Selection:
  • Copy: Select an area, then press Ctrl + C, then Ctrl + V
  • Move: Select and drag to a new location
  • Resize: Select, then drag the corners to make bigger or smaller
  • Rotate: Select, then use the rotate options in the toolbar

Magnifier Tool Z

Zoom in for detailed work

What it does: Lets you zoom in to work on tiny details, and zoom back out to see the whole picture.

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Magnifier tool (looks like a magnifying glass)
  2. Click on your drawing to zoom in
  3. Click again to zoom in more
  4. Right-click to zoom out
Pro Tip: Use the magnifier when you're working on small details like eyes, buttons, or text. Zoom in to 400% or 800% for really precise work!

Alternative: You can also use the zoom slider in the bottom right corner of the Paint window!

Text & Color Tools

Text Tool T

Add words to your drawings

What it does: Lets you type text directly onto your drawing with different fonts, sizes, and colors.

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Text tool (the letter "A")
  2. Click where you want text to appear
  3. A text box appears - type your words
  4. Use the Text toolbar to change font, size, and style
  5. Click outside the text box when done
Text Options:
  • Font: Choose different letter styles
  • Size: Make text bigger or smaller
  • Bold: Make text thicker
  • Italic: Make text slanted
  • Underline: Add a line under text
Text Background:

Choose between:

  • 💭 Transparent: See drawing behind text
  • Opaque: Solid color behind text
Important: Once you click outside the text box, the text becomes part of the drawing and can't be edited as text anymore! Make sure it's perfect first.

Color Picker Tool

Pick colors from your drawing

What it does: Also called the "Eyedropper" tool, it lets you pick up any color from your drawing to use with other tools.

1 How to use it:
  1. Click the Color Picker tool (looks like an eyedropper)
  2. Click on any color in your drawing
  3. That color becomes your active color
  4. Now use any drawing tool with that exact color!
Color Matching Game:

Try this fun activity:

  1. Draw several colored shapes
  2. Use the color picker to sample a color
  3. Try to draw a matching shape with the exact same color
  4. See if you can match all the colors perfectly!

Part 1: The Background
  1. Use the Fill tool to make a blue sky
  2. Use the Brush tool with green to make grass
