Let's Draw Cute Cats!

Cats are fun and easy to draw in MS Paint! They use simple shapes that you already know how to make!

This simple cartoon cat uses basic shapes that are easy to draw. Perfect for beginners!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1 Draw the Head

  1. Click the Ellipse Tool
  2. Choose Filled without Outline
  3. Set color to Orange
  4. Draw a medium circle near top of canvas
  5. This is your cat's head
Pro Tip: Leave space below for the body! The head should be about 1/3 of your total cat height.

2 Add Triangle Ears

  1. Click the Polygon Tool
  2. Choose Filled without Outline
  3. Keep orange color
  4. Draw two triangles on top of head:
    • Left ear: Click 3 points to make triangle
    • Right ear: Make similar triangle
    • Make them pointy but not too tall
  5. Double-click to finish each triangle
Triangle Tips: For cat ears, make them tall and pointy. Think of them as small mountains on top of the head!

3 Draw the Body

  1. Use the Ellipse Tool again
  2. Same orange color
  3. Draw an oval under the head
  4. Make it wider than the head
  5. Slightly overlap head and body
  6. This is your cat's sitting body
Body Shapes:

Try different body positions:

  • Sitting: Oval or rounded rectangle
  • Standing: Vertical oval
  • Lying down: Long horizontal oval

4 Add Face Details

  1. Eyes: Use Ellipse Tool with white
  2. Draw two small circles on face
  3. Add black pupils inside
  4. Nose: Use Polygon Tool with pink
  5. Draw small triangle pointing down
  6. Mouth: Use Curve Tool with black
  7. Draw small smile under nose
Expression Ideas:
  • Happy: Big eyes, wide smile
  • Sleepy: Half-closed eyes, small smile
  • Surprised: Very round eyes, O-shaped mouth
  • Grumpy: Angled eyebrows, frown

5 Add Legs, Tail, and Whiskers

  1. Legs: Use Rectangle Tool with orange
  2. Draw 4 short rectangles under body
  3. Tail: Use Curve Tool with orange
  4. Draw curved line from body
  5. Make it fluffy by making it wavy
  6. Whiskers: Use Line Tool with white
  7. Add 3 lines on each side of face
Paw Details: Add small ovals at end of legs for paws. Use pink for paw pads!

6 Add Background and Save

  1. Use Fill Tool for background
  2. Choose light blue for sky
  3. Add green rectangle at bottom for grass
  4. Optional: Add ball of yarn or fish toy
  5. Save as "My Cartoon Cat"
  6. Show it to your family!

Project 2: Sleeping Cat

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1 Draw Curled Body

  1. Click the Curve Tool
  2. Choose thick line (4px or 5px)
  3. Set color to Gray
  4. Draw a large C-shape for body:
    • Start at top left, curve around
    • End near where you started
    • Make it oval-shaped, not round
  5. You should have a curled cat shape
Sleep Position: Sleeping cats curl up with tail covering their nose. Your C-shape should be tight and cozy.

2 Fill the Body

  1. Click the Fill Tool (Paint Bucket)
  2. Use same gray color
  3. Click inside the curled shape
  4. The shape fills with gray
  5. If color leaks, use Undo (Ctrl+Z)
  6. Redraw any gaps in the outline
Important: Make sure your curve is COMPLETELY CLOSED before using fill tool, or the color will leak out!

3 Add Head and Ears

  1. For head: Use Ellipse Tool
  2. Draw small circle at one end of body
  3. This is the cat's head tucked in
  4. For ears: Use Polygon Tool
  5. Add two small triangles on head
  6. Make them relaxed, not perky

Sleeping cats have relaxed features:

  • Ears are flattened or relaxed
  • Eyes are closed
  • Body is curled tight
  • Tail often covers face

4 Add Sleep Details

  1. Closed eyes: Use Curve Tool with black
  2. Draw two small curves on face
  3. Sleep Z's: Use Text Tool
  4. Type "Z Z Z" near cat's head
  5. Make them different sizes
  6. Pillow: Use Rectangle Tool with light blue
  7. Draw rectangle under cat

5 Add Tail and Paws

Paw Placement: In a curled sleeping position, you might only see one or two paws peeking out. Place them near the cat's face.

1 Draw Kitten Body

  1. Kittens have big heads and small bodies
  2. Use Ellipse Tool for head
  3. Make head relatively large
  4. Use Ellipse Tool for body
  5. Make body smaller than head
  6. Use Brown color
Kitten Proportions: Kittens have heads that are about 1/3 of their total size, while adult cats have heads about 1/4 of their size.

2 Add Big Kitten Eyes

  1. Kittens have extra big, round eyes
  2. Use Ellipse Tool with white
