The Crown Jewel of Vedic Math!

Welcome to one of the most powerful techniques in Vedic Mathematics - the Nikhilam Sutra! This is where Vedic Math truly shines! ✨

"निखिलं नवतश्चरमं दशतः"
"Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah"

English Translation:

"All from 9 and the last from 10"

Why This Sutra is Revolutionary

The Nikhilam Sutra makes multiplication of numbers near bases (like 10, 100, 1000) incredibly fast - often solving in seconds what takes minutes with traditional methods!

The Nikhilam Magic Formula

For numbers near base 10n:
(Base + Deviation₁) × (Base + Deviation₂)
= (Base + Sum of Deviations) | (Product of Deviations)

Simple Example: 98 × 97

Both numbers are close to base 100

100
98
+
97
Step 1: Find Deviations from Base 100

98 is 2 less than 100 (100 - 98 = 2)

97 is 3 less than 100 (100 - 97 = 3)

Step 2: Apply Nikhilam Formula

Left Part: Base - (Sum of Deviations) = 100 - (2+3) = 95

Right Part: Product of Deviations = 2 × 3 = 06

Step 3: Combine Results

Left Part: 95

Right Part: 06

Final Answer: 98 × 97 = 9506

The Golden Rule: All from 9, Last from 10

How to Find Deviations Quickly

"For any number from base 10n: Subtract each digit from 9, last digit from 10"

Example: Find deviation of 998 from base 1000
Step 1: Write the number
9
9
8
Step 2: Apply "All from 9"

First two digits: 9 - 9 = 0, 9 - 9 = 0

Step 3: Apply "Last from 10"

Last digit: 10 - 8 = 2

10

Step 4: Combine Deviations

Deviation of 998 from 1000 = 002 (or simply 2)

Three Types of Nikhilam Problems

Case 1: Both Below Base

Example: 98 × 97

Both numbers less than base

Deviation = Base - Number

Case 2: Both Above Base

Example: 102 × 105

Both numbers greater than base

Deviation = Number - Base

Case 3: One Above, One Below

Example: 98 × 103

One less, one more than base

About this lesson (Week 9)

Week 9 is part of our free 48-week Vedic Mathematics course for children ages 8–14 at Nikhil Learn Hub. Vedic Maths uses ancient Indian sutras to make mental math faster, clearer, and more fun than traditional methods alone.

For parents & teachers: Read the lesson with your child, try the examples aloud, and use the practice section before moving to Week 10.

What is Vedic Mathematics?

A system of mental math techniques from ancient Indian texts, popularized for speed in addition, multiplication, division, squares, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions (Week 9)

Week 9 is one step in our 48-week Vedic Maths path. It includes explanations, worked examples, and practice for this topic. Read the lesson, try every example, then use practice before Week 10.

Plan about 45-60 minutes total, or two shorter sessions of 25-30 minutes. Small, regular practice works best for mental math.

Yes. Week 9 builds on earlier lessons. Finish Week 8 practice first when possible.

It suits curious learners ages 8-14 who know basic school arithmetic. If a step feels hard, review the hub or an earlier week.

Sit together for the first examples, ask your child to explain each trick in their own words, and celebrate correct mental steps. Use the Course Hub link above to jump between weeks.
