Trick 1: Add Left to Right
Traditional vs Vedic Way
"Start adding from the LEFT side, just like reading!"
Traditional (Right to Left):
47 + 28
7 + 8 = 15 (write 5, carry 1)
4 + 2 + 1 = 7
Answer: 75
3 steps, need to carry numbers
Vedic (Left to Right):
47 + 28
Add tens first: 40 + 20 = 60
Add ones: 7 + 8 = 15
Add together: 60 + 15 = 75
3 steps, NO carrying needed!
Trick 2: Complement Method
Using Base Numbers from Week 2
"For numbers near 10 or 100, use complements to simplify!"
Example: 98 + 96 (Both near 100)
Both numbers are close to 100
Find complements from 100:
• 98 is 2 from 100 (100-98=2)
• 96 is 4 from 100 (100-96=4)
Add complements: 2 + 4 = 6
Subtract from base: 100 - 6 = 94
Multiply complements: 2 × 4 = 8
Answer: 194 (94 from step 4, 8 from step 5)
Magic: 100 - (2+4) = 94, then 2×4 = 8
Trick 3: Number Splitting
Break Numbers into Friendly Parts
"Split numbers into parts that are easy to add!"
Example: 37 + 48
Split numbers into friendly parts:
• 37 = 30 + 7
• 48 = 40 + 8
Add tens together: 30 + 40 = 70
Add ones together: 7 + 8 = 15
Combine: 70 + 15 = 85
Answer: 85
= (30 + 7) + (40 + 8)
= (30 + 40) + (7 + 8)
= 70 + 15
= 85
