What We'll Master Today

Rounding Method

Make numbers friendly by rounding

Grouping Strategy

Add numbers in smart groups

Compensation

Balance numbers for easier addition

Pro Tip

These techniques are perfect for adding prices, scores, distances, and any 3+ digit numbers you encounter!

Method 1: The Rounding Method

Round to Nearest Friendly Number

"Round numbers up or down, then adjust the answer!"

Example: 347 + 198
1 Round 198 to nearest 100: 198 → 200
2 Add: 347 + 200 = 547
3 We added 2 extra (200-198=2)
4 Subtract the extra: 547 - 2 = 545

Answer: 545 (Much easier than traditional method!)

3 4 7

1 9 8

5 4 5

Method 2: Smart Grouping

Group Numbers That Add to 10 or 100

"Look for pairs that make friendly numbers!"

Example: 127 + 356 + 273 + 144
1 Look for pairs: 127 + 273 = 400
2 Another pair: 356 + 144 = 500
3 Now add: 400 + 500 = 900

Answer: 900 (Traditional method would take much longer!)

How to Spot Good Pairs:
  • Numbers ending with 3 and 7 (3+7=10)
  • Numbers ending with 4 and 6 (4+6=10)
  • Numbers ending with 2 and 8 (2+8=10)
  • Numbers ending with 1 and 9 (1+9=10)
127
+
273
= 400
356
+
144
= 500

400
+
500
= 900

Method 3: Compensation Method

Balance Numbers for Easy Addition

"Take from one number, give to the other to make them friendly!"

Example: 387 + 256
1 387 is close to 400 (needs 13 more)
2 Take 13 from 256: 256 - 13 = 243
3 Now we have: 400 + 243 = 643

Answer: 643 (Balanced the numbers perfectly!)

Check: 387 + 256 = 643 ✓
387
400
+13
256
243
-13

400 + 243 = 643

Real World Math: Shopping Example

Your Shopping Cart Total

Items in your cart:

  • Backpack: ₹799
  • Lunchbox: ₹498
  • Water bottle: ₹299
  • Notebooks: ₹401
Vedic Math Solution:
  1. Use grouping: 799 + 401 = 1200
  2. Use rounding: 498 → 500, 299 → 300
  3. 500 + 300 = 800
  4. Adjust rounding: 500-498=2, 300-299=1, total adjustment=3
  5. 800 - 3 = 797
  6. Final total: 1200 + 797 = ₹1997
